What We Actually Tested

Apps like these change their free plans and models often, sometimes without warning. So here is exactly what we tested, and how we scored it, so you can judge for yourself whether this still holds true by the time you read it.

• ChatGPT, Free plan: runs GPT-5.5 Instant. You get about 10 messages every 5 hours before it quietly moves you to a weaker model.

• Gemini, Free plan: runs Gemini 3.5 Flash. Your limit depends on how much work each question takes, not a simple message count.

• Claude, Free plan: runs Claude Sonnet 5. You get a weekly limit, shown as a bar in Settings.

We tested these the week of July 14, 2026, on an ordinary Android phone, using regular mobile data and also WiFi for comparison. All three were signed up fresh, with no card added, because that is how most beginners actually start.

1. First Impressions

ChatGPT is the one most people already know. Getting started is simple, and if you get stuck, help is easy to find online. Gemini signs you in fast if you already use a Google account, which many Android phones in Sierra Leone come with by default. Claude has the cleanest, quietest screen of the three. A few first time users thought it looked too plain at first, then grew to like how little it gets in the way.

2. Explaining Things Simply

This is where the differences showed up fast. For the compound interest and budget questions, Claude wrote like someone who pictured a real beginner reading it, short sentences, a real Leones example, no wasted words. ChatGPT came close, and likes to add headers and bullet points automatically, some people like this, others find it too much for a simple question. Gemini gave correct, safe answers, but they read more like a textbook than a conversation.

3. Writing Tasks

For the late payment email and the Facebook caption, Claude again needed the least editing. It sounded polite and human, not stiff. ChatGPT gave solid, usable drafts too, though the wording sometimes felt generic, like it could belong to any business anywhere in the world. Gemini's drafts were shorter, and sometimes needed a second request asking for a warmer tone before they felt ready to send.

4. Local Context

None of the three has been trained specifically on Krio, so always check any translation yourself before you use it. Gemini's ability to search the internet sometimes gave more current details about Sierra Leone, like how people use mobile money such as Orange Money or Afrimoney. Claude and ChatGPT both gave solid, general small business advice, but neither knows today's prices or this week's news unless you paste that information in yourself.

5. Speed, Free Limits, and Mobile Feel

ChatGPT's free plan ran out the fastest during testing, because it counts messages directly. Once you cross the limit, you get moved to a weaker model until the 5 hour window resets. Gemini's limit felt more forgiving for normal chatting, since it depends on how much work each request takes. Claude's weekly limit is generous if you check in a few times a day, but a long afternoon of testing will use it up fast.

All three use very little data for plain text chatting, so a normal conversation will not eat through your Orange, Africell, or Qcell bundle quickly. Asking for an image, or uploading a file, uses a lot more data, so save that for WiFi where you can.
